Morning Star

The Morning Star is Venus, brightest before dawn and after sunset. In Arnhem Land the Yolgnu call her Banumbirr. She came across the ocean from the east, from the Island of the Dead, Baralku, naming places, waterholes, rivers, mountains and animals. Every 18 months, the planet is positioned before dawn near the moon, a time for the conclusion of mortuary ceremonies.
