Ai, inherent vice
Ai is the word for indigo. It is also homophonous with the word for love. Fabrics, by their nature, contain the seeds of their own destruction, hence their inherent vice.
The tranquil simplicity of one colour, indigo, allows concentration on small differences in tone and on visual texture. Based on the traditional Japanese aesthetic sensibility of wabi-sabi the work is imperfect. The recycled patches show scars of their former use.
